TERRAVOLT.BMU Map

This page provides a geographical view of all Balancing Mechanism Units (BMUs) across the UK electricity grid.

Each marker on the map represents a generation unit, with colors indicating the type of generation technology. The size of each marker corresponds to its current output, with larger markers showing higher generation levels.

BMUs are individual generation or demand units that participate in the Balancing Mechanism, which National Grid ESO uses to balance electricity supply and demand in real-time. Each BMU submits physical notifications and bid-offer data to indicate how much it can increase or decrease its output.

The "Data Summary" section shows key statistics including the total number of BMUs, their combined output, and the average and maximum output values. Use the toggle switch to show or hide specific types of generation units on the map.

This map displays Primary substations across the UK and their associated small scale generation data. Each substation is represented by a circle, with polygons showing their service areas.

Substations are visualized from the substation_combined_service_areas.csv dataset, with small scale generation data from small_scale_generation.csv.

Hover over a substation marker or its service area to see details including:

• Total Capacity (kW) - The combined generation capacity of small scale generators connected to this substation
• Number of Notifications - The count of generation connection notifications received for this substation

The size of each marker is proportional to the small scale generation capacity at that substation. The data summary panel shows aggregated statistics across all primary substations.

Note: Not all substations have small scale generation data available.

This map displays embedded demand data across the UK. Each point is represented by a circle, with polygons showing their service areas.

The data is visualized from the substation_combined_service_areas.csv dataset, with demand data from large-scale-demand.csv.

Hover over a marker or its service area to see details including:

• Sum of Import (kVA) - The total import demand
• Sum Of Diversified Import (kVA) - The diversified import demand
• Diversity Factor - The ratio between diversified and total import
• Connection Type - The type of demand connection
• Connection Status - The current status of the connection

The size of each marker is proportional to the import demand at that location. The data summary panel shows aggregated statistics across all points, with a breakdown by connection type.

Note: Primary substations may have multiple demand connections of different types.
